Eileen Derbyshire, 89, Born In 1931 – Coronation Street
When Eileen Derbyshire got her big break in Coronation Street, she had to play Emily Bishop as an uncredited walk-on part for the first episode. By the time she retired from the role, it was 2016, and she had been playing the character for 55 years.
This officially makes her the longest-serving female actress in a British soap. Some of her storylines were pretty hard-hitting, too, with memorable ones, including one where the character’s inability to have children and how it affected her marriage. For her exploits, she earned an MBE on the 2010 Queens Birthday Honours list. Her son, Oliver Holt, is one of Britain’s foremost sports journalists.
