Johnny Carson Retires on Another Show
After NBC replaced Johnny Carson with Jay Leno in the early ’90s, the talk show host decided it was time for some payback. Carson had apparently been the last to know and was irritated by the network after news broke out in New York of his replacement.
Consequently, Carson made an appearance on “Letterman” in May 1991, which was a huge deal at the time. The interview was scheduled to confirm rumors that his time at NBC had come to an end and that the legendary presenter would retire in May 1992 after a 30-year run on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”
