A U.S. Marine is helping a prisoner of war quench his thirst, a moment of humanity amidst the brutality of war. While both sides engaged in harsh treatment of prisoners, there were instances where compassion prevailed. These prisoners, from the North Vietnamese Army, were captured during a patrol and brought back to the base.
Identification tags were placed on their chests to track when and where they were found. Throughout the Vietnam War, an estimated 600 American POWs and thousands of Vietnamese POWs were captured. This image highlights the complexities of war, where moments of empathy can emerge even in the midst of conflict.
