Here’s What Happened To These 40 Iconic Commercial Characters

Paul Marcarelli – Verizon Wireless

For nine years, starting in 2002, Verizon’s catchphrase was, “Can you hear me now?” Paul Marcarelli, this gray jacket, eyeglasses-wearing guy, delivered the line effectively for recall. The campaign was meant to target other companies for their signal quality; bluntly, low-cost cell plans wouldn’t matter if a call wouldn’t push through.

Marcarelli reportedly earned around $250K a year but had a strict contract: he was not to say anything about the campaign and couldn’t appear in other commercials. He became extremely popular because he would have people asking for autographs. However, he shockingly switched to Sprint and starred in a campaign called “Paul Switched.”
