Amish Myth Busting: Separating Fact from Fiction in Amish Life

Origins of the Name

The term “Amish” originates from Jakob Ammann, a Swiss Anabaptist leader. Many misconceptions exist about their lifestyle and beliefs. Often viewed as rejecting all modern technology, they selectively adopt valuable innovations. Jakob’s teachings emphasized simplicity, humility, and community, shaping their current way of life. Their settlement story began around 1720 when they sought religious freedom in America.

Braking off from the Mennonites, they initially settled in Pennsylvania, where English writer William Penn’s promise of religious tolerance attracted them. Today, they are known for their distinctive dress, horse-drawn buggies, and tight-knit communities. The name “Amish” reflects their dedication to Jakob’s principles of focusing on faith and tradition.
